The Denman Island Natural Burial Cemetery is unusual. First, it is a green cemetery. In fact, it’s the first contemporary, exclusively green cemetery in Canada. Second, it is operated by a non-profit society, whereas most cemeteries are operated by a municipality and thus are managed by government employees and supported by a local tax base. Third, it is a community cemetery, that is, it is designed to serve the needs of members of the Denman community and their families. As a result, eligibility is limited to a specific group of individuals (see Eligibility and Fees).
